Aciphex (Rabeprazole)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Aciphex is used to treat the symptoms of acid reflux (heartburn). Continued acid reflux into the esophagus can result in erosion of the esophagus and chronic damage. Aciphex acts by inhibiting the secretion of hydrochloric acid (HCl) into the stomach (proton pump inhibitor) thus decreasing acidity and making the stomach contents less irritating to the esophagus. It is useful in treating duodenal ulcers which may also be aggravated by HCl produced in the stomach. It is also approved for use in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome excess production of HCl in the stomach.
