Letrozole (Femara)

Letrozole is an inhibitor of aromatase which is required for the synthesis of estrogens. Thus this drug is indicated for the treatment of postmenapausal advanced breast cancer which has progressed despite antiestrogen therapy.

Oprelvekin (Neumega)

This drug is interleukin 11 which stimulates bone marrow production of red blood cells and platelets. It is indicated in the treatment of bone marrow depression due to cancer chemotherapy where a depression of platelets is a recognized and potentially severe side effect.

Rituximab (Rituxan)

This drug for intravenous infusion is indicated in the treatment of relapsed low-grade B cell, non-hodgkins lymphoma. Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody which binds to the CD20 antigen located on the malignant B cells. This binding results in lysis and destruction of the malignant cell.

Sterile Talc (Sclerosol)

Many patients with lung cancer accumulate fluid between the lungs and the lung lining (pleura). This accumulation makes it difficult to breathe and rquires periodic draining to relieve fluid pressure on the lungs. When instilled into the pleural cavity talc produces an inflammatory reaction which causes the lung lining to adhere to the lungs. This significantly reduces the intrapleural space and prevents further accumulation of fluid.

Toremifene (Fareston)

This oral drug is indicated in the treatmemt of metastatic breast cancer in women with estrogen-receptor positive cancer. Its action is proposed to be by its acting as an antiestrogen. There are a number of important drug interactions with this drug including thiazide diuretics and warfarin.
